One of these days, rather than type all of this shit out I'll just make a damn video. It would save so much time... any-who... I've always wanted certain books as a kid that I never thought in a million years I'd ever touch let alone own. The newest to my collection is the Avengers #55, which is the 1st appearance of Ultron. The seller was selling it as GD (to the uninformed, GD is Good or 2.0 out of 10). I graded it myself and got about a 4.0. Of course if it was a NM I'd be on eBay selling it. But... it isn't. I know some people (non comic book people) don't bother with grading and just say, yeah it looks good or its mint and that's fine as long as they're not wallet raping. Lots of other times it's because the person really has no idea what the fuck he/she is doing. Don't try and sell a book for a crazy amount that looks like it was just dug out of the local landfill just because you know the next movie is coming out. Doesn't work that way. Well, to the informed it doesn't.
I picked up this copy, unslabbed, on eBay and the moment the book came in I inspected it to make sure pages were intact, the staples etc. All indications, at least to me, pointed towards the seller under-graded it. As I mentioned, it was sold as GD, to me it was easily a grade or two (I hoped) higher. Put it back in the sleeve, packed it up and shipped it to PGX. Of course a week or so later... when the book was delivered this morning I was a little disappointed and relieved. The disappointment came when it was lower than I expected but relieved that it was graded higher than what the seller thought. According to some pricing guides I took a hit buying and slabbing it then comparing to it's worth. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy as shit to have it but still... You always hope. Either way collecting comic books is such a fulfilling hobby to have and that's the name of the game! You take a hit and keep moving forward. Kind of like what Rocky says. Anyways... there it is. The 1st appearance of Ultron. SLABBED! It still gets the bad ass seal of approval.
In closing PGX rocks. I'll always use them because their pricing and turn around time simply cannot be beaten. I still love CGC, I won't pay for a membership but I'll continue to buy CGC books from eBay or whatever. This also shows that PGX is getting a little stiffer on their grading process. Kudos to them! I'll also come back and revisit the worth of this book once the movie Avengers 2: Age of Ultron gets closer and is released. I guarantee this book will sky rocket.
